The cultural significance of the kalo plant goes beyond a luau food staple. In Hawaiian mythology and the creation chant, the first couple, Wākea & Ho'ohokukalani gave birth to a son, Hāloa-naka, who was stillborn. Wākea buried the child's body and from this sprouted the kalo plant.
The couple's second son, also named Hāloa after his elder brother, is who Hawaiians descended from. It was Hāloa's job to look after his elder brother, the kalo, and in return the kalo would nourish and sustain Hāloa's posterity.
